BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The groundbreaking ceremony for a flagship 30-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic power plant has been held in Kampong Belimbing, a village near Brunei's capital, Bandar Seri Begawan.
The ceremony held on Monday marked a major milestone in the country's clean energy journey, according to the local daily Borneo Bulletin.
Scheduled for operation by the end of 2026, it will produce over 64,000 megawatt-hours annually, powering more than 15,500 homes, reported Borneo Bulletin.
Strategically situated on a 32.29-hectare remediated landfill site near the capital, the solar plant transforms previously unused land into a productive clean energy asset.
Beyond power generation, the project will offset an estimated 41,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to planting 1.87 million trees.
Brunei is a Southeast Asian country in the northern part of Borneo Island. Located in the tropical zone, the Sultanate enjoys rich natural energy resources, including abundant solar irradiation.
