Myanmar grants amnesty to prisoners on Peasants' Day

YANGON, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's National Defense and Security Council pardoned over 10,000 prisoners and withdrew charges against thousands of individuals on Monday, the Southeast Asian country's Peasants' Day.

According to the amnesty order, the council granted amnesty to 2,825 domestic prisoners and 10 foreign prisoners on Peasants' Day. It also pardoned 7,337 prisoners convicted under the Counter-Terrorism Law.

In addition, the council withdrew and dropped charges against 12,487 individuals involved in 9,532 cases related to the Counter-Terrorism Law. Furthermore, it reduced the remaining prison terms by one-sixth for eligible prisoners.
