MANDALAY, Myanmar - On Monday, five bomb blasts targeted the junta's administrative machinery, the Mandalay city development office, and four township tax offices.

The 11 a.m. explosion occurred during a meeting with workers from different administrative offices, according to a source close to the city development office in Chanayethazan Township.

"A lot of people were present. They threw a bomb at the hall, but it fell at the entrance. It was so loud that it shook the buildings," the source said.

"Everyone in the hall started panicking. Police officers and soldiers arrived soon after the blast and made everyone present sit in the office yard, and they started their inspection [of the scene]."

He added that he didn't believe anyone was hurt in the blast and that no one at the workplace saw the offender.

The responsibility for the attack on the municipal office was claimed by a group calling itself "Justice Mandalay People Defense Force" through a social media statement.

Blasts struck four tax offices in Pyigyidagun, Chanmyathazi, Chanayethazan, and Maha Aungmyay townships around midday on the same day; no group had claimed responsibility for the attacks at the time of reporting.

Two blasts occurred within the Mandalay municipal office and the internal revenue office, according to a report by Radio Free Asia's (RFA) Burmese station on Monday, citing information provided by the military's spokesperson. It added, three staff members and a civilian who came to pay taxes were injured.

Anti-coup activists, whose movement has been violently suppressed in Mandalay, have appealed to the public to stop paying taxes on power, water, and land to deprive the coup regime of finances.

Community members said the tax offices targeted in Monday's attacks were infamous for pressuring locals to pay their taxes to the junta.
