Indian PM unhappy with emissions agreements between rich and poor countries
Myanmar News.Net Sunday 8th November, 2009
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has attended the opening session of the World Economic Forum-India to ask for concessions from the industrialised nations.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told the meeting India would work diligently for improvements in target-setting for carbon emissions, but made it clear that the richest nations would have to bear more of the financial burden.
He alluded to the problems which had been created by highly industrialised countries by saying: "The historic accumulation of CO2 is not as a result of anything that we have done. It is largely a consequence of 150 years of industrialisation in the major developed countries of the world."
He said the traditional large polluters would need to subsidise the technology required for developing countries to deal with the reduction in greenhouse gases, which will cost around
$150 billion annually by the year 2020.
While India has said that poorer nations should be exempt from legally binding caps on carbon emissions, the US and other developed countries want India to reduce its share of carbon emissions.
While Mr Singh has said his government is not yet ready to quantify reduction targets, he will discuss the matter further with participating countries at the Copenhagen summit in December. Email this story to a friend
