A senior US official is due to meet Myanmar's prime minister on Wednesday.

Washington, in seeking to improve ties with the the military-ruled nation, has sent the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Kurt Campbell, to meet Premier Thein Sein and, hopefully, detained Myanmar pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Myanmar officials have announced the talks with Thein Sein will go ahead in Naypyidaw, although there has been no similar arrangement with General Than Shwe, the junta leader.

It is hoped the meeting with the Suu Kyi and members of her National League for Democracy party will take place later on Wednesday when the US envoy flies to Rangoon.

Campbell is the highest ranking US official to travel to Myanmar since a visit by Madeleine Albright as US ambassador to the United Nations in 1995.

The Obama administration has recently decided to change tack on dealings with Myanmar, as former isolation policies have failed.
