Bangladesh fears Myanmar may attack their island in Bengal bay
Myanmar News.Net Sunday 18th October, 2009 (IANS)
Bangladesh, which is currently engaged in a dispute with Myanmar over border fencing, fears that Yangon may attack its St. Martin's Island in the Bay of Bengal, a media report said.
Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), which guards the land border, has identified the St Martin's Island as the 'probable main target' of Myanmar and has asked the government to immediately strengthen its defence by constructing aircraft landing zones and concrete bunkers.
This is contained in a 'strategic proposal' that came in the wake of constant military build-up and intimidation by Myanmar, The Daily Star newspaper said.
The St Martin's Island, the only coral island of the country and the main attraction for local and foreign tourists for its panoramic beauty and pristine marine life, is under the jurisdiction of the Bangladesh Coastguards.
The island, which is located in a mineral rich region in the Bay of Bengal, is 8 km west of Myanmar coast.
The BDR has submitted its proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Prime Minister's Office, the navy and air force headquarters and the director general of Coastguards.
It has also urged the government to increase defence capability of land and sea borders to 'repulse any possible aggression by the neighbouring country'.
Both Dhaka and Yangon have moved in more forces along the border and deployed naval ships and fighter jets in the last ten days since Yangon erected a barbed wire fence and allegedly pushed in thousands of Rohingya Muslim tribals who inhabit the western flank of the Arakan ranges close to the Bangladesh border.
Bangladesh, which has over 4,300 km border with India, shares 300 km of its border with Myanmar.
Marking a 148 km stretch of border with Myanmar and India as 'unguarded', the border force has suggested setting up temporary frontier camps until a new battalion is set up in Ali Kadam area as per the BDR restructuring proposal.
The restructuring proposal has been made as part of the changes Dhaka wants to effect after sections of the border guards staged a mutiny in February in which 74 people were killed.
It has asked the government to arm the paramilitary force with more manpower and modern military equipment, the report said.
The border guards say that the Myanmar military often crosses the zero line at the Bandarban frontier and carry out operations to combat various separatist organisations. Apart from erecting barbed-wire fences and unilaterally mobilising the army, the Myanmar authorities are forcing their nationals to enter Bangladesh territory.
A senior home ministry official Saturday said the Prime Minister's Office is dealing with the 'very sensitive and serious matter', the newspaper said. Email this story to a friend

Bangladesh fears Myanmar may attack their island in Bengal bay
Myanmar is buddhist country.Rohingya are musilm and not included in Myanmar national traces. They live in Bangladesh .They have difficult lifes in Bangladesh and that’s why they are trying to enter Myanmar and Myanmar 's neighbouring countries like Thailand and Indonesia.Whenever Myanmar Immigration department inspects the people who live near border for NRC ,Rohingya were run away from Myanmar land and got back to their native country ,Bangladesh. At that time ,Bangladesh government always told UN that Myanmar people were invading their country.By the way, Myanmar is under milittary government ,it is easier to get a proper life as Myanmar has plenty of foods , natural resources and good weather.According to the geographical information Myanmar is also the only one main gate to enter the SEA.
Now, you can see the truth.

Real Politics
The real truth of the matter is Bangladesh used to buy all of their defence armor from China.Recently Bangladesh stop buying arms from China. Thats bad business for a super power. They are involved with Myanmar to unstabilize the peace of the region. Banglasesh is a peace loving nation. To keep peace and keeping their land intact, they will do anything against any odds. Don’t forget the lesson of history of 1971 war. Bangladesh does not want war.If they have to fight they will win at any cost. Bangladesh Govt. should involve UN and USA, pay more attention to the matter and try to resolve the situation more diplomatic way.

Whatever
All the land in the world all the minerals and all the gas and oil does not belong to mankind. It belongs to our creator who gave it to us. Mankind is just greedy and has no respect for the beauty that our Creator gave us. It all goes about money power and greed. Mankind is so stupid. We should all work together as we only have one planet one home and it was given to us as a gift. All that our creator wanted was that we love and respect and glorify him. Look at us all today, we all should take a good look in our harts and start to forgive love and support one another.

Both Sides Need to Stop and Think!
Both countries need to grow up! Here’s an idea - how about sitting down and discussing your problems instead of sabre rattling? Both countries can’t even feed their own nations without outside assistance, so grow up, sit down and talk about the problem and solve it diplomatically. Nothing bugs me more than these tin pot third world nations who want assistance to feed their own people and then have standing armies of 1 million. Cut down the armed forces, invest in your infrastructure, provide education, support your own people and local industries and you guys may actually get somewhere (like being able to drink the water). For God’s sake, humanity has not learnt anything from world history!

Lets play
Definately burmese army is bigger than bangladesh army. But in modern warfare size doesnot matter. Almost 200000 pakistani soldiers attacked bangladeshi civilians and kincked out from mighty bengal in only 9 months with 90000 soldiers surrendered. Only handful bangladeshi boarder guards (BDR)captured 17 indian villeges in 2004. 16 indian soldiers killed. Ok lets go in little bit past.......... We kicked out the portugese from bengal before any one in india. We fight against the british before any indian kingdom dare to did...... the ancient bengal was called vonga and the king of vonga attacked alexander the great with 20000 infanitry, 5000 horse rider and 5000 eliphant and greeks just escape from india.
SO THIS IS BENGAL........ NEVER THINK TO FIGHT WITH US EVEN IN YOUR DREAM..
JOY BANGLA

know the facts first
@ BigPhil: bangladesh is no longer a tin pot third world nation. it does NOT depend on foreign aid anymore. of the $15bn annual government budget foreign contribution is less $1bn(most of it is loan not AID and we always pay them back on time) Bangladesh spends less than 1.5% of its gdp for military(less than the world average) It has one of the highest gdp growth rate among the LDCs and it will become a middle income country within 5-10 years. we need the oil/gas of the sea to fuel the growing economy. this is ours and burma cant take it by force. They may try but they will fail like they did last year. Bangladesh might have fewer troops than burma but have bigger and stronger navy and air force. so STOP WRITING SH*T you fat ignorant racist moron!!!

Bengali Tiger 05-25-10, 09:23 PM |
How dare you!!!!
One thing that I do not understand is that people actually have the cheeks to compare Burma to BANGLADESH. Burma may have 1 million armies, but they are barely equipted with anything (maybe mostly bamboo sticks). I can proudly say that Bangladesh is far too strong for Burmes Govt to handle. If Burma tries to un settle anything, then they will have alot more to loose than gain and in the process Bangladesh can claim extra Burmese land to account for the dis-ruption cost and UN cannot ignore this either. Enough said!!!!!
