Iran's police chief, Esmail Ahmadi Moghaddam, has told reporters that no evidence has emerged to show prisoners were raped at a detention centre.

Rather, he said, no one was raped at the now closed government detention centre of Kahrizak.

However, he went on to say, without going into detail, that some offences had been committed at Kahrizak and a number of individuals directly responsible for the prison had been suspended and arrested.

He said a trial was likely to take place.

Allegations that prisoners were being mistreated surfaced on a website, after anti-government protestors were incarcerated for being involved in the widespread unrest that erupted in Iran following the disputed June election.

The Kahrizak prison was eventually closed upon the order of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

On Wednesday, the Ayatollah told cheering crowd that Western enemies were had been responsible for unrest and subsequent government crackdown on opposition supporters.
