Olmert agrees to release more Palestinian prisoners

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has agreed to the release of 120 to 150 Palestinian prisoners later this month.

Palestinian officials have said Mr Olmert wants the transfer to be seen as a gesture to the Palestinian people before he resigns in September as Israeli prime minister.

It is believed the release will include long-serving inmates, women and children as well as political leaders.

While Israel has declined to say how many of the 11,000 or so Palestinians in its custody would be released, it is believed at least 150 people will be allowed out of jail.
