Perth airport evacuated over bomb fears
Myanmar News.Net Sunday 4th May, 2008
Perth International Airport was evacuated Saturday night, disrupting travel plans for thousands of people.
The shut-down, over almost twelve hours, from 6:00pm to to 5:30am, followed the discovery of several suspicious packages on board an inbound Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur.
Thousands of airline passengers, and airline staff, were hurried from the busy West Australian terminal to areas two kilometres away, while an investigation was carried out on the source and content of the packages. Eight international flights had to be canceled, diverted or postponed.
The bomb squad was brought in finally which resulted in an x-ray machine screening the packages before the all-clear was given.
During the turmoil thousands more people had to be turned away from the airport entrance. Passengers booked on flights, people seeing them off, and others arriving to greet arrivals were among those prevented from entering the airport grounds.
