JAKARTA, June 5 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and three others injured when a car hit a truck on a highway in the western Indonesian province of North Sumatra, regional police said on Wednesday.

The accident took place on a highway connecting Binjai and Langsa on Tuesday afternoon, said the province's traffic police chief Muji Ediyanto. Three infants reportedly died in the crash.

According to the preliminary report, the accident occurred when the car with eight people on board hit the rear part of the freight truck. The car driver was believed not to be concentrating while driving, Ediyanto said.

Deadly road accidents are common in the Southeast Asian country due to overloading, poor road conditions and reckless driving.
